Multiplication

As Jesus began His public earthly ministry, He was already preparing for the time when He would no longer be visibly and bodily among us. Considering the tremendous task that He would leave for His followers, He chose a relatively small group of men who would walk, learn, and grow in the vibrant shadows of His ministry to others and in the seclusion of heartfelt dialogue. Though His choices were deliberate, the men He chose were a mixture of influence, doubters, thinkers, zealots, impetuous brooder, a lovable guy, and even a reluctant leader and an outcast. Jesus wanted these men to catch His vision and His heartbeat. He wanted them to learn to love as He loved. He wanted them to use their skills and their talents to share the message that changes lives and places eternity in the heart of each changed life. He wanted their hands to be His hands, their feet to be His feet, their voices to be His voice, and their heart to be His heart. These were men who did not fully understand – for a time. But when they did, they could not be silenced and the few became many, and the few were multiplied again and again. Today the multiplication continues, but today you and I are the ones that Jesus wants to catch His vision and His heartbeat, to be His hands, His feet, His voice, and His heart. Yes, and we have some of the same idiosyncracies as those He started with. We are as diverse and perhaps mismatched as they seemed to be, and yet God has chosen each of us to continue the task that small group of men began. In the final analysis, they were all very ordinary men, and we are all very ordinary women, but God has given us homes and families, communities and friendships, workplaces and coworkers, churches and fellow believers. It is within these places and with these people, that God wants us to use the talents and the skills He has given, to share the message that changes lives. To be multipliers, we need a passion that refuses to be silent, and a willingness to use our ordinary places to carry out the incredible task Jesus gave us to do.
