Don’t You Remember?

Twelve disciples were getting hungry, and their thoughts and discussion turned to food! Sounds pretty normal, but they were missing what Jesus was trying to teach them. Wanting to turn their attention away from filling their stomachs, Jesus queried, "Don’t you remember?" If it was physical food they needed, even without a picnic basket, Jesus was more than capable of providing for them. Don’t you remember what I was able to do with just five small loaves of bread and two fish? It was a meal intended for one child, and I amply fed over five thousand! There were even leftovers! And in another desolate place, more than four thousand sat and ate and were fully satisfied, when all that was brought to Me were seven loaves and a few small fish. Don’t you remember? So often, like the disciples, our memory fails us. We each have a personal history of God’s provision and His enablement, and yet when we are frustrated or discouraged, or life just gets tough, we forget! We forget what God has done and has given, and we forget that God does not change. The love that motivated Him yesterday motivates Him today. The courage, the wisdom, the strength, the perspective, the skills, the hope, the discernment, the direction – God gave them before and He still wants to give them now. Jesus begins to tell His disciples about the suffering that would be His, but Peter attempts to refute His statements. Peter is sure God would never allow such things. Jesus’ response is, "You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, and not from God’s." Don’t you remember? God does not always think or act within the bounds of our human understanding. How’s your memory? Paul was able to say that God could adequately meet his every need. He said it in another way when he said that God was fully providing for his journey through life. Why was he able to say these things? He remembered. And he also remembered that God’s provision came in accordance with His will and perspective. Our God is unfailing and unchanging in responding to the needs of His children, and He is true to both His promises and His purposes. Don’t put Him in the proverbial "box," but – count on Him. |
