Storytelling

Storytelling is an ancient art form that through the centuries has connected the generations. It captures its audience as it draws the listener into seeing the world, a culture, or simply a singular experience through the eyes of another. Stories can entertain, explain, incite, encourage, give expression to feelings, or uniquely shape and color the unknown or even the familiar. Many of the pages of Scripture are filled with written stories that not only relate a history of God’s involvement with man, but also communicate vital and important truths about God Himself and about principles for living. We also see in God’s Word the instruction for parents to teach their children the stories of God’s faithfulness, as well as His laws. The reason for doing this was to help each generation set its hope anew on God, and in turn, the children who were not even born yet, would also hear. The Master Storyteller was Jesus in His earthly ministry, walking among the people, ministering to their physical needs, but telling stories that conveyed in everyday language and experience the heart of the gospel message and God’s design for godly living.
David must have been a storyteller. He said, "I have not been afraid to speak out. I have not kept this good news hidden in my heart. I have talked about Your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness." David’s hope was that others would see his life and hear his words, and place their trust in his incomparable God. Do we share David’s passion? We too have a story to tell. Paul was compelled to tell his story because he had such a keen awareness of God’s incredible grace in his life. We need to grow our own awareness not only of what God has done for us, but also an awareness of the character, perfections, and purposes of our God. When our awareness becomes conviction, then our conviction will become our compulsion. David and Paul could not be silenced, and you won’t be able to be quiet either!! The story you know and possess of God at work in your life has the power to influence, to convey truth, to encourage, and to give to others a better understanding of God. Your "great assembly" may be your child, a friend or coworker, a neighbor, someone in your small group Bible study, or the one who is walking a path you once walked. As you help to turn another generation’s hope toward God, you will find you not only told your story, but more importantly, you told His. Be a storyteller! |
