Pregnant with Feeling
|

Some things in life we may forget, but if we have been pregnant with a child growing inside us, we never forget what it was like. And when we were pregnant, the awareness of our pregnancy was constantly with us. We could not forget that we were pregnant! There were the obvious reminders like "morning sickness," a bulging waistline, swollen feet and ankles, enlarged breasts, and sometimes erratic emotions, and then there were the softer, quieter reminders as the anticipation of our little one was never more than a thought away, and the delight of sensing and feeling the growth of our precious child captured most of the moments of our waiting.
There are other seasons of our lives that parallel the constant awareness we experience with pregnancy. It may be the deterioration or breakdown of a relationship, or the concern for a son or daughter who has chosen the path of the prodigal, or is serving in the military, and possibly, overseas. You may be struggling with care giving responsibilities that streamline both your time and your energy within the restraining walls of your home. Perhaps you have lost your job, and you are still putting out resumes, while the bills pile up, the refrigerator seems to contain only aging condiments, and the kids’ shoes are worn and getting too small. You may be wearily approaching another holiday or birthday, and mechanically putting one foot in front of the other, still grieving for the loved one you will not share it with. The awareness of our situation is constant. We may be doing other things, but our heart, our spirit, and our thoughts and emotions fully feel the situation we cannot walk away from, and we cannot forget, even in the moment.
Psalm 91 speaks to our weariness. Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. He alone is my refuge, my place of safety, he is my God, and I am trusting him. He will rescue me, and protect me. He will shield me with his wings, and shelter me with his feathers. His promises are faithful. When I call on him, He will answer, and be with me in my trouble. He will rescue me, honor me, and satisfy me. We belong to Him, and He belongs to us, and we find Him wholly dependable, totally trustworthy, and unfailing in His love, His concern, His enablement, His belief in us, and His hope for us. We may be very pregnant with feeling, but our God never forgets either. He answers when we call. |
