Wishes and God-Moments

Sometimes life just seems to happen. Nothing unusual. Nothing challenging or frightening. Just the day by day routines and the monotony of repetition. My little grandniece paused in her backyard play, and brought me a small bouquet of fluffy dandelions. I asked the question with an obvious answer, "Arianna, did you pick me some dandelions?" Her quick response corrected my perception, "No, I picked some wishes."
A friend and I talked about letting God into our ordinary, especially when that ordinary keeps us preoccupied with the endless repetition of things that must be done, but seems to give us little in the way of fulfillment or just a moment of inspiration. We talked about "God-moments" – looking for Him in those daily occurrences, listening for Him amidst the buzz of our to-do list, soft whispers of communication that share my heart, fixating on the minute details of His creation, feeling His warmth in the hug of a child, appreciating His security in the love of a spouse.
Wishes and God-moments transcend circumstances. They allow us to be where we are not. They remind us of the blessings of simply being alive. They weave reality with hope. They energize our spirits, and help us reach for tomorrow. They foster a healthy independence and a quiet joy that rises above the ordinary. They let us dream the fulfillment of our potential. Wishes and God-moments. But wishes really are like dandelions. They vanish with a puff of air. They leave behind a hint of warmth, but their reality is gone. God is unchanging. God is eternal. God is trustworthy, capable, and fully involved in the details of our lives. Enjoy the momentary delight of sharing wishes with a child, but make a habit of collecting God-moments. He will change the ordinary into the extra-ordinary. Who else is like you, O Lord? Who is glorious in holiness like you – so awesome in splendor, performing such wonders? With unfailing love you will lead this people whom you have ransomed. You will guide them in your strength to the place where your holiness dwells. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my victory. He is my God, and I will praise him.
