Because of His Love

Many times when I sign a note I have written to another believer whom I don’t know personally, I close by writing the words, "Because of His love." I want to convey in some small way that I am who I am for no other reason, other than the love of God. I am far from perfect, and I still have sandpaper edges that can roughly irritate others, but I recognize that whatever "good" I am, or have accomplished, it has emerged from the unmeasurable limits of His love. The psalmist sometimes felt abandoned and forgotten by God, his soul heavy with the anguish and sorrow of living with the pursuits of his enemy day after day after day. He cried out to God for light in the darkness and the refreshment and encouragement that would bring renewed life. Even with his feelings though, he rooted his faith deeply in the love of God. But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. I will sing to the Lord because he has been so good to me.
We all have "enemies" that pursue us. Our enemies come from within, and they come from without. They lurk in the darkness of our secrets, and they scream at us from the untimely and devastating intrusions into our once ordinary lives. They can pound unceasingly, or they can jab and taunt with an irregular pattern. Some of our enemies are mutually shared with others because they arise simply from the complicated busyness, stress, and expectations of our society, but other enemies seem to make us the lonely target. Whatever they are, they are real, and we can easily feel the abandonment and the heaviness of the psalmist. When I look at my own life, I am very aware of a love that is far greater than anything that has attempted to distort, distract, disappoint, or even devastate. It is the love of a Father in all of its perfections. Constant, unchanging, unfailing, forgiving, embracing, upholding, encouraging, giving, protecting, providing, challenging, molding, shaping. A love that knows no limits. Deep as the deepest sea. Wide as the ocean. High as the heavens above. This is a love I can trust. This is a love that will cause me to rejoice. This is a love that will make me sing! My God is sooo good.
